Cha Cha basic step

Could you please answer a question I have about Cha Cha dancing?
In the Latin Cha Cha, for the basic step, is it standard to do the chasse step (the cha cha cha) "in-place"? or is the standard and most common way to do the chasse step by moving to the side? Is there any form of Cha Cha where doing the chasse step "in-place" is considered the standard form? Or is doing the chasse step "in-place" considered a common variation?
